Moses Lake Yacht Club, former Unlimited Hydroplane owner/sponsor, closes

The Moses Lake Yacht Club will be no more, after disbanding last month, but it leaves behind a history that will long linger in the memories of those who participated.

The need for speed grew and the club acquired the old unlimited hydroplane named Slomoe. It joined the American Powerboat Association with the newly named Miss Moses Lake. It took third place in the national championship race at Las Vegas in 1958.

New dates for Detroit Gold Cup

The Detroit River Regatta Association today announced new dates for the running of the 2010 Detroit APBA Gold Cup. The event will be held on the Detroit River June 25-27.

In announcing the move to the June dates, DRRA President and Race Director Tom Bertolini pointed out several factors that led to the DRRA decision.

We believe that more of our race fans are at home in late June than our previous dates, which were closer to the 4th of July,” explained Bertolini.

Bertolini added, “This also gives us the opportunity to hold the event in co-ordination with other Detroit area festivals and events in late June and give the area a tremendous two-week kickoff to summer.”

Event Director Mark Weber pointed out that, “Now that our dates have been finalized, our season ticket holders should receive their pre-season ticket sales packages soon.”

"We are very excited about opening our season in Detroit and competing for the APBA Gold Cup," said Sam Cole, H1 Unlimited Chairman,"
"This is an opportunity that the Detroit River Racing Association could not pass up and we want to help support them in any way that we can," Cole added. " I think this is a great way to start the season with a premier event like the APBA Gold Cup. It will create excitement that should carry through to our other events."

The 2010 APBA Gold Cup will begin with testing and qualifying on Friday June 25th and racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Former Unlimited hydroplane great George Henley died after suffering a heart attack early Monday morning in Puyallup, Wash. He was 72.Henley spent only six years as a driver in the Unlimited ranks, but his 12 career victories place him 12th all-time. His greatest success came at the wheel of the famed Pay 'n Pak, which he drove to National High Points championships in 1974 and 1975.

History on the water

Jeff Bernard and Dave Villwock were the first two racers on to Doha Bay at the start of the Unlimited testing session and duly created apiece of history by being the first two Hydroplane drivers to take to a stretch of water east of Florida and outside the Americas with their
H1 Unlimited hulls.

“It is a beautiful setting here and a perfect place for a race course,” enthused David. “I had to pinch ourselves when I actually hit the water for the first time today. The last race was over 7,000 miles away and the race in Qatar will decide the outcome of the championship. We will be running slightly tighter into the corners here and a bit closer together, but it should be a great two days’ of racing if we can avoid getting any salt in the turbine engines.”

Brian Perkins, driver of the U-48 Go Fast Turn Left Unlimited Hydroplane turned in his race boat seat for a saddle and girth on a camel at a camel race track north of Doha, Qatar. After his laps as a gentleman jockey Perkins said he enjoys being one of the 10 hydroplane drivers racing in the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship Nov 19-21.

“When I had the opportunity to get on one, I was surprised as to how high I was once they stood up, Perkins said. “I must have been ten feet in the air.”

Hejen Racing Committee hosted the unlimited drivers, their families, race officials and race crews.

Other driver's who participated were Ken Muscatel (U-25), Jeff Bernard (U-5), J. Michael Kelly (U-7), Mike Webster (U-22), Jean Theoret (U-37) and Nate Brown (U-17). Brian Perkins along with Steve David have agreed to share their daily experiences in Doha on the ABRA's web site, www.abrahydroplanes.com

The protective covers are all off and Wednesday night they got most of the boats washed. The two have been in Doha for over a week and have been serving as the sport's Ambassadors, meeting new fans along the way. Bob Ross said via phone Wednesday night, "The people here are real nice and friendly and are getting real excited to see the Unlimited Hydroplanes race."

“I think it’s much bigger than we perceive. A world championship, driver, team. For the sport, it’s much bigger. This could really offer a huge future that could really elevate the sport… for teams, for compensation. We need to do a great job, be great ambassadors. Use this as a giant pole vault for the sport in the future," said U-1's Steve David.

“It's very difficult to get the sponsorship dollars now (compared to past). If we represent ourselves well, make some friends, some corporate friends, I think we’ll be able to springboard this sport to a whole new gear,” said U-16's Dave Villwock. “This will be a very big deal for the sport and the future."

“It’s 50% more dense. That’s strike one. Strike two is a two mile course. It’s been a long time since we’ve run on less than a 2.5 mile course. More salt in the air and will cause more trouble for the turbines,” said U-16's Dave Villwock. “It’s something we have to deal with. We know there are some challenges there that may cause us trouble.”

"The salinity is higher than in San Diego,” said U-1's Steve David. “We’re trying to run a tighter operation – different filters and intakes. The problem is it hangs in the air. With a short course, we’ll be running into our own salt in the air.”

The Amercian Boat Racing Association (ABRA) on Monday announced they have hired Tampa Digital Studios to produce and broadcast live the inaugural Oryx Cup UIM World Championship, Nov. 19-21 in Doha, Qatar via the hydroplane racing series’ web site, www.abrahydroplanes.com.

The coverage will include multiple high definition video cameras,, interviews, and play-by-play audio provided by veteran hydroplane public address announcer Steve Montgomery for each qualification heat and the winner-take-all final. The coverage will have unlimited broadband capability, designed to grow with the number of users logging on.

Three commercial sponsors, Five Axis Industries (www.fiveaxisind.com), Formula Boats (www.formulaboats.com), and Oberto Sausage Company (www.obertosausagecompany.com) will be featured in the streaming broadcast.
