Oberto appeal upheld. Steve David and team reinstated as winner of San Diego

via HydroInsider

HydroInsider Update...

H1 Statement: The board of directors of H1 Unlimited today voted to accept the recommendation of the committee hearing the appeal of the outcome of September’s San Diego Bayfair to allow the appeal and reverse the disqualification of the Oh Boy! Oberto and reinstate that team’s victory. In a letter to H1 Chairman Sam Cole explaining the decision, committee chairman Fred Hauenstein wrote, “The hearing committee met by telephone conference and heard input from parties directly involved with the appeal as well as technical experts. As a result, the committee unanimously agreed to allow the appeal. In other words, recommending reversal of the DQ at the San Diego Final Race.” In explaining the committee’s decision, Hauenstein said, “The H-1 rules require that the low pressure flow rater data ONLY be used to judge legality of a contestant. However, in the final heat, the U-6 low pressure flow rater data was judged to be in error. There was an unacceptable amount of "noise" in the signal and the high pressure flow rater data was consistent with previous heats in which the low data was legal.” Hauenstein concluded by saying the committee was encouraged by the fact that steps were being taken to alleviate the problems which led to the situation. Chairman Cole added, “This has been an involved process and I want to thank Fred Hauenstein, and his committee for their efforts. As we stated from the beginning, our goal was to apply the necessary time and effort needed to come to an accurate assessment of the equipment involved and the decision that had been reached as a result of the readings at the conclusion of our San Diego event.” Cole conluded, “We can now put this event in our rear view mirrors and move forward to the Oryx Cup UIM World Championship in Doha, Qatar in January and the continued growth of the sport.”

HydroInsider Update...

From H1: The report from RacePak on the testing equipment was received. The information has been forwarded to the Appeals Committe to review as part of the appeal for the final results from San Diego. The Oberto team has asked to make an in-person meeting with the Appeals Committee as well.

Finals Results - Unofficial
  1. 6 Oh Boy! Oberto -Steve David
  2. 5 Graham Trucking - Jimmy Shane
  3. 1 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock
  4. 9 Jones Racing - Jon Zimmerman
  5. 11 Peters & May - Tommy Thompson

In the winner-take-all finals, it was Jimmy Shane in the 5 Graham Trucking grabbing the inside lane.   Steve David in the 6 Oh Boy! Oberto in lane two and Dave Villwock in the 1 Spirit of Qatar in lane three.

Shane hit the start line first, but Steve David grabbed the lead coming out of the first turn.  Shane stayed right on his hip, but at the Sea World turn, David pulled father ahead.  Villwock in lane three had fallen back a bit.

In lap two, Shane closed the gap.  Shane and David went side-by-side, but David pulled back ahead  at the end of lap two.  At the end of lap three, it stayed a two boat race.  Villwock stayed in third.

At the start of the final lap, it was only a three boat lead for David, but he started to lengthen it out and won by a little less than a roostertail.

It was a three boat race, but it quickly thinned to two as Thompson and Evans fought it out.  Evans led out of the first turn, but Thompson passed him up and put on some speed.  Thompson out-ran Evans to the finish.

SAN DIEGO 2012: Heat 3B - Dave Villwock & 1 Spirit of Qatar Win

PHOTO:  Lisa Courneya
Heat 3B Results
  1. 1 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock
  2. 6 Oh Boy! Oberto - Steve David
  3. 100 Fox Plumbing - Greg Hopp
  4. 18 Bucket List Racing - Kelly Stocklin
All eyes were on Heat 3B as it put the season's top boats, the 1 Spirit of Qatar and the 6 Oh Boy! Oberto in the same heat. Dave Villwock needed to pick up points after not being able to finish the second set of heats. He had the team's back-up engine, its last, in the boat.

As they came up to the start-line, Dave Villwock in lane two hit the line first and came out of the first turn in first.  But Steve David in lane one was just a boat length behind.  They ran close for most of the first lap, but Villwock picked up speed on lap two and went way out in front, about two roostertails on David.

SAN DIEGO 2012: Heat 3A - 5 Graham Trucking & Jimmy Shane win

Jimmy Shane and the Graham Trucking continued their great run this season with another heat victory.

Shane grabbed the inside lane with Tommy Thomson in the 11 Peters & May in lane two.  Shane hit the line first and came out of the first turn and sprinted out to a four boat lead.  Thompson and Zimmerman had a good race for second.  Scott Liddycoat was late to the start and paid the price, having to start in 5th and reel in Mark Evans to move into 4th.

Zimmeran, meanwhile, passed up Thompson and tried to move in on Shane, but didn't have the boat speed to run him down.

Heat 3A Results

  2. 9 Jones Racing - Jon Zimmerman
  3. 11 Peters & May - Tommy Thompson

SAN DIEGO 2012: 6 Oh Boy! Oberto & Steve David win Heat 2B

PHOTO:  6 Facebook Page
The saltwater has started to take it stoll on equipment this weekend in San Diego.  Before the heat, the 37 Beacon Plumbing withdrew from Heat 2B, and then later withdrew for the rest of the weekend.

The disappointing weekend continued for Kip Brown in the 17 Miss Red Dot, which had mechanical problems Saturday.  Prior to the start of the heat, the Our Gang Racing team asked for a little more time to finish up work on the boat, but was denied by H1.  In the water, the 17 started strong, but went dead in the water.  It was restarted, but headed back to the pits.

Meanwhile, Steve David in the 6 Oh Boy! Oberto ran to a relatively easy win.

SAN DIEGO 2012: 5 Graham Trucking & Jimmy Shane wins Heat 2A

PHOTO:  Scott Przybylski via HydroNews
Jimmy Shane won the heat, but the big news is the flame-out of the 1 Spirit of Qatar (literally).  On the backstretch of Heat 2A, flames came shooting out the back of Dave Villwock's boat, forcing him to shut it down.  The Ellstrom team has just one engine remaining...

Heat 2A Results
  1. 5 Graham Trucking - Jimmy Shane
  2. 9 Jones Racing - Jon Zimmerman
  3. 88 Degree Men - Scott Liddycoat
  4. 11 Peters & May - Tommy Thompson
  5. 57 Miss DiJulio - N. Mark Evans
ONE LAP PENALTY - HIT A LANE MARKER

DNF.  1 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock

Heat 1A Re-Start Results
  1. 1 Spirit of Qatar - Dave Villwock
  2. 5 Graham Trucking - Jimmy Shane
  3. 100 Fox Plumbing - Greg Hopp
  4. 57 Miss DiJulio - N. Mark Evans
  5. 11 Peters & May - Tommy Thompson
Heat 1A was black-flagged on the first attempt after Kip Brown was forced to shut down the 17 Red Dot in the first turn right before the race.  Too dangerous to keep the heat going.  It meant Kip saved the equipment from further damage, but he was not allowed to take part in the re-start.

When the heat got back underway, it was Jimmy Shane grabbing the inside lane again.  Dave Villwock took lane two as they came up to the start line.  As they hit the start line, Shane immediately grabbed the lead, but Villwock was right on his hip.  Greg Hopp was in third.

On the backstretch, Villwock hammered the 1 Spirit of Qatar and took the lead.  Shane stayed right by Villwock at the end of lap one - less than two boat lengths.  But the Qatar's boat speed was too much for the 5 Graham Trucking.  Villwock started to pull away, going out to a roostertail lead in lap two.  Racers settled in and held their positions.

With the 400 points for both Villwock and Steve David on Saturday, David kept his thin margin lead in the National High Points season championship.

DNF.  37 Beacon Plumbing - J. Michael Kelly
ONE LAP PENALTY - JUMPED THE GUN

J. Michael Kelly grabbed lane one with Steve David in lane two and Scott Liddycoat in lane three at the start.  Kelly led David across the start line, but the start went under review.

We had a great race for the first lap.  At the end of lap one, David was slightly ahead of Kelly, but coming out of the first turn, Kelly grabbed it back.  Back and forth they went with David taking the lead back on the back stretch and started to lengthen it out.

But wait!  The 37 had a one lap penalty for hitting the line early and Kelly backed off the pedal.

David stretched it out to a roostertail lead over Scott Liddycoat to take the checkered flag.  Meanwhile, Kelly took the 37 back into the pits - apparently for mechnical issues - giving up points.

Heat 1A Shutdown

Heat 1A was stopped when Kip Brown in the 17 Red Dot went dead in turn one right before the start.  Officials decided it created a dangerous situation and put out the black flag.  At the time of the stoppage, Jimmy Shane and Dave Villwock were side-by-side coming out of the second turn and headed toward start-finish at the end of lap one.

How far we have come

It was just four years ago that I had a phone line installed in San Diego (and paid for it out of my own pocket) so Hydroinsider.com could stream Steve Montgomery and Mark Allen calling the races in San Diego.

We piped the Public address system into a phone line. Then I rented space on a server in Richland, WA to redistribute the audio feed to a server farm in New York... And out to the Internet.

Now h1 has an audio and video feed for every race site, including San Diego. People may complain from time to time about h1, but they've got this important piece done so that we can all watch the races. Congrats.

U- designation going away

Don't know if you noticed, but the U- designation for boats is gone from
the official references... It's now the 6 Boat instead of U-6.

Thoughts?

This would have been the weekend for hydroplane races at Couer d'Alene, ID

Hopefully 2013.

More controversy on Heat 3A...

From 6 Oberto FB page:

According to sources in Seattle, the officials say that we cut the field off on the back stretch before the start. Since this call was made after the heat, and we do have rear cam film showing we did no such thing, they decided to add one minute to our time. The officials have not even came and spoken to the team about this. As you would imagine, several of the team officials are not happy with the call being made, nor the lack thereof of being notified in person. Will keep you up to date on further developments.

Heat 3a should be great! David, Villwock, Shane in the same heat. Plus Zimmerman in the 9 boat that has found some real speed this weekend! #H1Unlimited #Hydros

Prizes for heat winners

Albert Lee provided prizes for heat winners in Seattle this year.  Steve David won a refrigerator for winning heat 1A.  Good news since he said his frig is acting up.  Dave Villwock won a nice BBQ for winning heat 1b.  Said it's the biggest prize he's won at Seafair.

Here's what the crew had to fix.  Just not enough time to get it finished.  They gave it a great shot, even getting the boat on the hook for heat 2B... but couldn't get it in the water fast enough.

Wow.

Nate Brown = Brett Favre??

Brett Favre has nothing on unlimited hydroplane drivers, most of whom announce numerous retirements before one finally sticks.

Nate Brown, in fact, considers himself still retired even though he will be piloting the U-17 Miss Red Dot at the Albert Lee Cup at Seafair unlimited hydroplane race this weekend on Lake Washington.
