ABRA, APBA and Detroit Regatta Association have contingency plans in place:
From ABRA: Due to the high winds, all three organizations have agreed to attempt to run two three-lap elimination heats at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
If the high winds persist the event will be ruled an incomplete event and no contest.
The 100th running of the Gold Cup will take place in 2009.
The last time the APBA Gold Cup was ruled ‘no contest’ was at Lake Mead, Nevada in 1960 due to similar wind conditions

"If we can't run, I think they should just give it to the top qualifer," joked U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison driver Steve David... who by coincidence just happens to be the top qualifier..."That would be fair, I think."
Some of the other teams might disagree, especially Jeff Bernard and the U-5 FormulaBoats.com team. Jeff's won his two heats so far and leads in total points.

The Offshore boats got on the water at Detroit. Because of the way they are built, they can run on much rougher water than the Unlimited Hydroplanes.
However, the Motley Crew flipped. Ron and Scott Roman were aboard.

Jimmy King and U-3 Chrysler Jeep was penalized for encroaching on Mike Allen (U-7 FormulaBoats.com) in Heat 3A, in which Allen flipped.
DETROIT FREE PRESS:
"Oh Boy Oberto driver Steve David said, “I don’t think Jimmy crowded him intentionally. It’s really rough down in that first turn, and if you hit a wave with the bow it can jerk the boat over to the left whether you want to go there or not.”

Mike Allen appears to be OK. He is being taken to a Detroit hospital as a precaution.
Boat has been brought back to shore and out of the water. It's up on the trailer now. There appears to be serious damage to the sponsons and decking on the boat's left side.
There is some debris in the first turn that crews are assessing. We're on a HOLD.

Brian Perkins and the U50 Spirit of the Navy is taking the royal blue hydroplane out on to the somewhat calm Detroit River. Spooling up the Lycoming T55 motor he seems to be having a little difficulty.
Mike Allen in the U7 now takes to the water. Swinging through the roostertail the boat looks smooth.
Now Brian gets the 50 running. Allen slamming into the turn looking to see if the team has given him more power.
Steve David now takes a turn on the course. Allen is hugging the buoy line as Perkins screams past us here in the pits. Steve now running by us looking great. The 13 is trailer firing. Brian Perkins doing a nice run on the buoy line. The team clapping. Coming up the back stretch running wide close to the outside now. This young man has a lot of potential.
David had some trouble with the Oberto now has it running again.
